Ken Peng (MSc in progress) Ken did his undergraduate degree in Statistics at Simon Fraser University. His MSc project involves a Bayesian implementation of the critical velocity model which is well-known in sports science. Matthew Ryers (MSc 2020) Matthew did his undergraduate degree in Statistics at SFU. His project used NFL player tracking data to develop methods for quarterback evaluation. Matthew is now working in quantitative sports consulting for Zelus Analytics (email: matthew_ryers@sfu.ca).
Dani Chu (MSc 2020) Dani did his undergraduate degree in Statistics at SFU. His MSc project involved an investigation of fouling in the NBA with the hope of better addressing substitutions. Chris Li (MSc 2019) Chris (Mengyang) came to us from China. His MSc project involved a first look at Combine data from the NHL. There is some indication that some measured variables may be predictive of future performance. Chris is currently working as a data analyst for the Vancouver Island Health Region. Richard Hsia (MSc 2017) Richard did his Bachelors in Statistics at UBC. His MSc project concerned ranking and prediction in cycling. He has created a nifty app for Cycling Canada (email: rhsia@sfu.ca). Richard is now working as a Quantitative Data Analyst for Connor, Clark and Lunn in Vancouver.
Sarah Bailey (MSc 2017) Sarah is a former varsity athlete having done cross-country running at the University of the Pacific and Jacksonville University. Her MSc project used Statcast data from Major League Baseball to provide predictions of batting average. She was co-supervised by Jason Loeppky (email: srbailey@sfu.ca). Sarah is now working as Manager Analytics and Data for the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL.
Steven Wu (MSc 2017) - Steven has an undergraduate degree in Statistics and Computing Science from Carleton. His MSc project involved the use of AI to improve the accuracy of event data recorded in basketball. This work was presented at the 2017 MIT Sloan Conference. Steven is now working with Shopify in Ottawa (swa157@sfu.ca).
Rajitha Silva (PhD 2016) - Rajitha came to us with an MSc in Statistics from Sam Houston State. He is originally from Sri Lanka. He completed his PhD on sports analytics with three papers having already appeared in refereed journals. He is taking up a faculty position (Senior Lecturer) at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, Sri Lanka (email: rsilva@sfu.ca).
Gerald Smith (MSc 2016) - Gerald came to us with an undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto. His MSc project concerned player evaluation in the NHL using a shot adjusted measure as the response variable. He does sports consulting work in Vancouver. (email: geralds@sfu.ca).
Harsha Perera (MSc 2011 and PhD 2015) - Harsha is from Sri Lanka and has a bachelors degree with honours from the University of Peradeniya. He is a keen cricketer and has completed his MSc degree where he produced a paper on Duckworth-Lewis and T20 cricket published in the IMA Journal of Management Mathematics. Harsha's PhD dissertation was unique in that it was entirely devoted to cricket. The contents of the theses contained four published papers. Jorge Rodriguez (MSc 2013) - Jorge came to us via Kansas State, the University of Connecticut and Mexico. His project looked at the existence of the hot hand in putting using Shot Link data. No hot hand was discovered. Jorge is now doing sessional teaching in Statistics. (email: jer3@sfu.ca).
Kasra Yousefi (MSc 2013) - Kasra is originally from Iran and has a bachelors degree in Statistics from SFU. His project involved the development of a spatial model for putting in golf. Juan Valero (MSc 2012) - Juan is from Colombia and has a bachelors degree from Universidad de los Andes in Bogato where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. His MSc project investigated the existence of synergy between batsmen in opening partnerships. This work has been published in the Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics. Aruni Tennakoon (MSc 2011) - Aruni is from Sri Lanka and has a bachelors degree in Statistics and an MSc in Industrial Mathematics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She has completed her MSc degree where she studied the effect of the state of a series in a seven-game playoff. This paper has been published in JQAS. Rianka Bhattacharya (MSc 2010) - Rianka came from the University of Calcutta, one of the most prestigious universities in India. She has completed her MSc which concerned the use of the Duckworth Lewis method in T20 cricket. The accompanying paper has been published in the Journal of the Operational Research Society. She completed the PhD in Applied Statistics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and is now a statistician at Becton Dickinson. (email: rianka.rc@gmail.com).
Vivien Wong (MSc 2009) - Vivien completed a BSc in Statistics at SFU and continued her MSc studies with us. Her MSc project involved a Bayesian analysis of judges scores in synchronized diving. Saman Muthukumarana (MSc 2007 and PhD 2010) - Saman is from Sri Lanka and has a bachelors degree in Statistics from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. His MSc project involved the Bayesian analysis of mark-recapture data. This work is a discussed paper in the Canadian Journal of Statistics. He recently completed his PhD under my supervision with three resulting papers. He has a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Manitoba. Amy Summers (MSc 2005) - Amy has an undergraduate degree from UNBC in Prince George and was an NSERC student during her MSc studies at SFU. Her MSc project concerned the optimal drafting of players in hockey pools. She has received considerable media attention for her work. Yiqing Li (MSc 2004) - Yiqing is originally from China. His MSc project concerned the prediction of the 2004 US presidential election. The approach is Bayesian and uses state survey data to estimate the number of electoral college votes for the major parties. He is now a golf instructor (email: ylia@stat.sfu.ca).
David Beaudoin (MSc 2003) - David has an undergraduate degree from Laval. His MSc project developed a new measure for assessing batting and bowling in one-day cricket. This work was published in the South African Statistical Journal, 2003. David was co-supervised by myself and Paramjit Gill. David completed his PhD in statistics at Laval and is now an Assistant Professor in Laval's Business school (email: packersbills@hotmail.com). Farah Khandwala (MSc 2001) - Farah has an undergraduate degree from Guelph. Her MSc project concerned the improvement of subregion adaptive integration via an alternative error criterion. The project also performed a preliminary investigation into the estimation of run-size of a salmon population. Farah has since worked as a biostatistician at the Cleveland Clinic and at the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and Research Clinic in Lahore, Pakistan. Lucia Mok (MSc 2001) - Lucia is originally from Hong Kong and obtained her undergraduate degree from SFU. Her MSc project concerned the analysis of sports data and the translation of a practical problem into a non-standard test of hypotheses. Ellen Chan (MSc 2000) - Ellen is originally from Hong Kong and obtained her undergraduate degree from SFU. Her MSc project concerned a Bayesian analysis of pupping probabilities for a species of seal. She graduated in the spring of 2000. Greg Pond (MSc 2000) - Greg has an undergraduate degree from Brock University. His MSc project concerned the analysis of BC Sports Lotteries and he graduated in the spring of 2000. Some of this work was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 2001, 259-268. After graduation, he worked as a statistician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then completed his PhD in Biostatistics at the University of Toronto while employed as a biostatistician at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Wenjun Chen (MSc 1992) - Wenjun came from China with an undergraduate degree in Engineering. Silin Ma (MSc 1992) - Silin came from China and did a BSc at SFU before enrolling in the MSc program. His MSc project concerned an analysis of data from the BC Ministry of Forests. He is now a Pacific Rim Trader in Vancouver.
Sarath Banneheka (MSc 1992) - Sarath came from Sri Lanka with undergraduate training in Mathematics. His MSc project involved the study of Kingbird nest predation using logistic regression and Cox's proportional hazards model. After completing his MSc, he went on to do a PhD in Statistics at SFU under R Routledge. He is now a professor at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka (email: banneheka@yahoo.com).
John Nasila (MSc 1992) - John came from Kenya with an undergraduate degree in Statistics from the University of Madras. His MSc project involved the analysis of the response of nematodes using regression methods.
